A fast-moving wildfire, designated the Hughes Fire, erupted on January 22, 2025, near Lake Hughes Road in Castaic, California. The blaze has rapidly expanded, consuming over 3,400 acres and prompting mandatory evacuation orders for several areas.
The fire ignited shortly before 11 a.m. PST and swiftly grew to 500 acres within an hour. By 12:30 p.m., it had expanded to 3,407 acres with zero percent containment. As of 1:03 p.m., the fire had further increased to 5,200 acres, still with no containment.
In response to the escalating situation, authorities have issued evacuation orders affecting approximately 18,000 residents in the Castaic area. An evacuation center has been established at Valencia High School, located at 27801 Dickson Dr., Valencia, CA 91355. Additionally, shelters for large animals are available at the Lancaster Animal Care Center and Pierce College, while small animals can be taken to the Palmdale, Agoura, and Lancaster Animal Care Centers.
Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Angeles National Forest are actively combating the blaze. Resources deployed include multiple helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, such as four Super Scoopers, performing water drops and applying fire retardant to contain the flames.
The cause of the Hughes Fire is currently under investigation. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to evacuation orders to ensure their safety. Los Angeles County officials emphasize the importance of paying attention to evacuation orders and warnings during this critical time.
This incident adds to the region's challenges, as Los Angeles County has already been severely affected by historic wildfires earlier this month. The combination of high winds and dry conditions continues to exacerbate wildfire risks in the area.
